Bellydance History

    Belly Dance is inundated with myth, legend, and tradition.  Although the age of Belly Dance is disputed many pledge a claim to the origins of this ancient African dance form. 

Many believe that the dance original purpose began with sacred fertility rites and rituals taught by woman to woman. This became a method of praise, worship, and celebration as it is inscribed in the interior rooms and passageways of Afrikan (Khemit) tombs and temples known as hieroglyphs. (The oldest known spiritual writings in t he world)  Spiritual movement has taken many forms throughout the traditions.

    Bellydancing was and is the most natural way for a woman to move, no matter what age or weight. The movements awaken the sensuality and feminine power within, creating a stronger more flexible and graceful body.

       Some seem to erroneously believe that this dance form is something scandalous.  

To prove "respectability", some bellydancers clothe in many layers. It is an important role as a bellydancer to distance ourselves from the stripper-masque image, and more important to pontificate to people about the historical birth ritual and origins of the dance.  

Today Belly dancing is used and enjoyed worldwide as a way of celebrating femininity and is taught in almost every country. As it helps women gain confidence in their bodies, bellydance exercises are also used in natural childbirth classes.  Bellydancing acts as an aid to exercise as the sweat and gentle nature of the hip movements help one to stay fit and lose weight.
